Guildford Nightstop provides short term emergency accommodation for vulnerable single homeless 16-19 year olds in the homes of approved volunteer hosts, while longer term options are put into place. It is based on similar schemes run nationwide by a mix of organisations, all affiliated to Nightstop UK , who monitor and support the projects. Accommodation is provided one night at a time, overnight only, and includes an evening meal, bed and breakfast. The young person will be given the private use of a bedroom, access to a bathroom and the opportunity to wash clothes. |

Referrals are considered from a range of professional housing and youth agencies such as social services, Connexions and local authority housing departments. The referral will include assessing the suitability of providing accommodation in a volunteer’s home. Full referral information and forms can be obtained from the project co-ordinator. Volunteers are recruited from a variety of backgrounds. Some volunteer as drivers, in order to help a young person get to or from their host; others volunteer as hosts, providing overnight accommodation. All volunteers will have a desire to listen to and help young people, in an accepting and non-judgmental way. For further information on volunteering see Volunteer Questions and Answers. Support and advice is made available to homeless young people by the Connexions Personal Adviser attached to the project, which is funded by Connexions Surrey. Homelessness prevention is undertaken by the project through educational presentations and workshops in local schools, in partnership with Guildford Borough Council.
