Summer opening hours at Plantation Cafe

Whilst most of us hope to relax at some point over the summer and enjoy a quieter period over August, the Plantation Cafe workers have increased their hours to provide longer cafe sessions for young people now on holiday from school.

Open from 1 - 6 pm Monday to Saturday Plantation offers an alcohol and drug free environment where young people can relax without the pressure of having to spend money. For many of the regulars it has become a home from home and firm friendships have been formed there. Youth workers are also on hand for advice and guidance, as well as the opportunity to sign up for exciting projects that can really make a difference to a young person's outlook on life and understanding of his or herself.

Every other Friday evening is gig night - earplugs not provided! More information can be found at www.plantationcafe.org.uk

Desparately Seeking Susan

Actually, the name may not be Susan, but certainly Joy Ahearn our Nightstop co-ordinator is looking for couples who would open their homes to young people in need of safe emergency accommodation.

During the summer months Nightstop has been very quiet. Young people who find themselves with nowhere to stay can sleep rough in all sorts of places in the warmer weather. But this does nothing to resolve their situation. However if they come to Joy's attention, not only can she arrange a safe bed for the night but also does whatever she can to defuse the crisis.

In order to provide a safe bed, we depend on the hospitality of volunteer hosts. Joy is keen to recruit new hosts ahead of next winter, to ensure that she has enough accommodation should the need rise. If you would like to know more please contact her on 01483 532555 ext 527 or email JAhearn@guildfordymca.org.uk

New group for young parents

Thanks to some funding promised by Guildford Community Family Trust over the next 2 years, youth workers from Plantation have started up a new group for parents and parents-to-be aged under 25. Led by Hannah Nicholson, this will meet over lunch at Midwey House, Wharf Road every Monday with a view to offering support and advice.

The group started just this week and Hannah hopes that young parents will find the group helpful. She said, "This group has the potential to be an invaluable source of practical, social and spiritual support for a group of young people who are often overlooked. With the help of some able volunteers I believe we can offer them something very important."

Over the summer she and her helpers will be encouraging the young people to improve their First Aid knowledge amongst other practical skills, as well as encouraging them to have fun with their babies.

If you know a young person who would appreciate this group please call Hannah on 01483 888122.

A great summer venue for all ages

The restaurant at Guildford YMCA has been called the Forum for many years, but has often been known informally as the Y Restaurant. It has now been officially renamed, and has a new logo that gives prominence to the Y of YMCA as well as indicating its riverside location.

The terrace is proving a popular spot for morning coffee and lunch as the summer hots up.

Still offering great prices, the restaurant continues to provide a range of freshly prepared lunches including a vegetarian option. The menu changes daily so there's always something for everyone.

Opening times:
Monday - Saturday 7 am - 3 pm
Serving breakfast from 7 am - 11 am (Saturday from 7.30 am )
Serving lunch from 12 noon - 2.30 pm
